Giving back to the Places you visit
We at Stravaigin Sailing aim to give back to the environment we live and work in, the people we engage with and the communities we are part of. We are very conscious of our place in the world, our interaction with the natural environment and our role within rural communities therefore we aim to sustain and support these whenever possible.
We care about the environment, nature and people of the west coast - and we know you do too!
A trip with Stravaigin is so much more than just a sailing holiday. It is a chance to connect with nature and immerse yourself in the beauty and hospitality of the Scottish west coast. And the best thing is that you can rest assured that your trip will leave a positive impact on the places you visit.
Reducing your Carbon Footprint
We know you care about the way you travel!
Your sustainable journey begins long before stepping aboard. Our sailing trips depart from Oban and Mallaig, two towns on the west coast of Scotland that are easy to reach by public transport. We highly encourage you to jump on a train in Glasgow, take the West Highland Line and reach Stravaigin in the most sustainable way possible.
By choosing a sailing adventure, you choose a low-carbon mode of transport. Whenever possible, we raise the sails to harness the power of the wind to travel. Our induction stove, lights and power outlets are charged by our solar panel and wind generator, providing clean energy for all your comforts on board. Our engine, which we use to safely negotiate tidal fates and harbours, runs on bio-diesel. Read more about our sustainability practices on board Stravaigin.Supporting Local Businesses & Organisations
Having lived and worked on the west coast of Scotland for over 30 years, Stravaigin is in itself one of the local businesses you support by booking a sailing holiday with us.
For many of our trips, we team up with local specialist guides who will share their passion, skills and knowledge of the local area with you. Read more about our crew and guest guides here.
We source as much of the food we serve on board Stravaigin from local suppliers and producers. The fewer food miles the better! Not only does this reduce the carbon footprint of the food you eat on a sailing trip with us, but it also means that you contribute to supporting a varied network of small local businesses on the Scottish West Coast.
We’d like to think of the Stravaigin as a floating classroom. Education and research are important aspects of our work - and we don’t just mean the knowledge we pass on to you during your trip!
Throughout the year, we partner with educational institutions like the University of the Highlands and Islands to host students, we support local charities like the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust with a percentage of our profits, and we deliver outdoor experiences and education to underprivileged children and young people, and those with special needs.
Your choice to sail with us makes this work possible as a percentage of the fees we charge for our holidays will be used to help us deliver these experiences. If you would like to support us further by adding a little extra to your booking fee, that would be wonderful, and a great way of “giving back”.
