Stravaigin Sailing Oban

A Typical Day Aboard Stravaigin

A slow rise in the morning for those who like to linger in their cabins with the aroma of fresh coffee enticing them out on deck to join the early risers taking in the new day up on deck. Morning is a great time to spot wildlife preparing for a new day depending on the season and location we may see seals hunting, sea birds feeding or otters foraging the tide line with their cubs.

A quick dip followed by a hot shower to freshen up for the day and a home cooked breakfast in the salon or cockpit sets us up for raising the anchor or loosing the lines and heading out a secluded bay or pretty harbour and as soon as the winds allow raising the sails to forge ahead to a new location.

Out at sea the winds and tides aid our journey to our chosen destination, our companions may be playful dolphins riding our bow wave, Manx Shearwater skimming the crests of the waves, Guillemot bobbing down below as we pass or if fortunate, a breaching Minke whale. But always there is the ever-present sound score of wind in the sails and the sea around us.

Reaching our destination for the day we drop the anchor or take a mooring and dinghy ashore to access remote and delightful coastlines that we can explore at our leisure. A coastal walk or foray inland to quiet glens or take in a nearby hill and enjoy stunning views from our elevation or using SUPS we can nudge our way farther into shallow bays and river entrances knowing a hot shower is waiting back on board if we get a little too involved in the cool sea!

Food is an important of life aboard and we take care in providing delicious and filling meals using as much as possible locally sourced products and supporting ethical producers and suppliers so lunchtime and dinner time are a treat where you may enjoy local seafood, hearty soups and stews, hill reared beef or lamb and outdoor breed pork as well as sweet treats and snacks.

In harbour there is always the option of a stroll ashore and visiting the many attractions on offer there not least the local pub and have a pint with the locals.

Stravaigin ends her day at the chosen anchorage for the night in good time to relax, change out of above deck gear and pour a dram enjoying some nibbles while recounting the adventures of the day and waiting for the evening meal to be served.

As the sun goes down on another incredible day experiencing Scotland’s stunning landscape and wildlife, a warm bunk invites you to relax and fall asleep to the gentle sound of the ocean cradling you and the breezes passing over, with the anticipation of tomorrow’s adventures.
